Wrestling places second at Adrian Invitational as four Cougars win individual weight classes

ADRIAN, Mich. – Averett University men's wrestling opened its 2022-23 season with a strong second-place showing at the Adrian College Invitational on Saturday. The Cougars had four wrestlers win weight class divisions with 27 placing between the freshman/sophomore division and the varsity division.

Senior Hai Siu went 4-0 on the day after defeating Gavin Andreoni by fall to place first at 149 pounds. Sophomore Jesse Alvarado placed first at 157 pounds, he went 4-0 on the day and beat Tim Smith by major decision in the first-place match. Junior Kyle Sanders placed first at 133 pounds after he wrapped up the tournament with a 4-0 record, which landed him in first place. In the 125 freshman/sophomore division, freshman Jaden Flores placed first after winning an all-Averett final.

As a team, Averett finished second only to 2022 NCAA Division III national runner-up Wabash College.

Sophomore Daniel Porter went 2-2 at 125 pounds and placed fifth in the tournament and Mason Barrett ended the day in third place, going 3-1. In the 125-pound freshman/sophomore division, sophomore Daniel Parkulo was second and freshman Mateo Duarte finished the tournament 4-1 and placed third for a 1-2-3 sweep at the top three spots.

Junior Olli Karjalainen placed eighth after going 2-3 on the day at 133. In the 133-pound freshman/sophomore division, freshman Wyatt Parker went 3-2 and finished in fifth place.

At 141 pounds, sophomore Hunter Campbell came in fourth after going 3-2 in the tournament. Junior Marcus De La Rosa placed eighth in the 141-pound freshman/sophomore division after he went 2-3 on the day.

In the 149-pound freshman/sophomore division, sophomore Alex Driggs finished in eighth, recording a 2-3 outing. At the 157-pound freshman/sophomore division, freshman Ryker Permann went 3-2, and placed fourth. Freshman teammate Owen Harshbarger placed third after he went 4-1 on the day. 

Sophomore Anthony Taylor went 3-2 on the day and finished in fifth place at 165 pounds. Freshman Xavier Swanson, in the 165-pound freshman/sophomore division, finished in second after he went 3-1 on the day. At 174 pounds, junior Javonte Hobbs landed in fifth place when he finished the tournament 3-2.

184-pound sophomore Khalil Mitchell went 3-1 on the day and finished in second place. Senior Kowan Lee placed sixth after finishing the tournament 1-3.

In the 184-pound freshman/sophomore division, freshman Nolan Gertwitz finished in sixth place after he went 3-3. Jacob Jimenez went 3-2 and finished in fourth place. Freshman Carter Erickson placed seventh after he went 2-2 on the day.

Redshirt senior, Billy Baldwin finished 3-2 and placed seventh in the 197-pound division. Freshman Jasiri Dingle at 197 placed sixth after recording a 3-2 outing. After going 2-1, junior Jamar Christian placed second at 285 pounds.Sophomore William Longhurst went 3-1 on the day and placed third in the 285 freshman/sophomore division.

Averett returns home for a dual against McDaniel College on Saturday, Nov. 12.
