FOREST, Va. — Averett University men's wrestling senior
Hai Siu was selected as the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's Wrestler of the Week for the lower weight classes on Monday.
Siu, a native of Durham, North Carolina, went 4-0 on his way to winning the 149-pound weight class at the Adrian College Invitational on Saturday. In his first event as a Cougar after transferring to Averett, Siu earned a major decision in the first round and won by tech fall in the quarterfinals. He then took down Wabash College's Gavinn Alstott by fall (1:25) in the semifinals and then defeated Campbellsville University's Gavin Andreoni by fall (6:23) in the final to win.
As a team, Averett finished second in the 15-team tournament only behind Wabash, which was the national runner-up last spring at the NCAA Division III national tournament.
Siu, a contender in the preseason d3wrestle.com rankings, becomes the first Averett wrestler to earn an ODAC weekly award in the Cougars' inaugural season in the ODAC, which is sponsoring wrestling for the first time as a conference in four decades.
The lower weight classes consist of 125-157 pounds. Ferrum College's Rayshawn Dixon was the ODAC Wrestler of the Week for the heavier weight classes.
