YORK, Pa. – Averett University wrestling wrapped up the first day of the York College New Standard invitational, sitting in fourth place with four wrestlers qualifying for the semifinals on Friday night.

Senior Hai Siu battled his way to the semifinals, mauling all opponents in his path in the 157-pound weight class. He recorded two falls, one of which was against Gabe McDaniel in the quarterfinals. 

At 125 pounds, sophomore Mason Barrett punched his ticket to the semifinals after he defeated Riley Parker by a 3-1 decision.

Junior Kyle Sanders qualified for the semifinals in the 133-pound weight class after he defeated Larry Melchionda in a commanding 8-1 decision win.

Sophomore Hunter Campbell made his way to the quarterfinals where he lost in a close match to Victor Perlleshi by sudden victory in the 141-pound weight class.

At 157 pounds, sophomore Jesse Alvarado had quite the performance. He recorded a 17-0 technical fall, and a 15-2 major decision win against Austin Manning in the quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals.

At 165 pounds, sophomore Anthony Taylor battled his way to the quarterfinals, but ultimately lost by decision to Jackson Gray

Freshman Nate Mallery qualified for the quarterfinals. In a tight match, he lost to Konrad Parker in a 3-2 decision.

Khalil Mitchell had a dominating performance in the 184-pound weight class. He recorded two technical falls, his second came in the quarterfinals against Cade Cowley to secure a spot in the semifinals.

Junior Jamar Christian made his way to the quarterfinals at 285 pounds, but was defeated by Michael Dooley by decision.

The Cougars return to action on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. to begin day two of the New Standard Invitational.
