DANVILLE, VA. — The Averett University men's tennis program rolled past Virginia Wesleyan University 9-0 on Sunday Afternoon at the Averett Tennis Courts.
Fresh off a victory over Division II Shaw University on Friday, Averett (1-3) was able to keep things rolling by not dropping a single match to Virginia Wesleyan (2-3) which included the Cougars not even dropping a single set in singles action all afternoon.
Sophomore
Rufus Nurminen picked up a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles which proved to be the tightest singles match of the afternoon. In No. 1 singles junior
Jorge Figueroa also earned a tight victory 6-4, 6-3 which was the last singles match to finish.
Three freshman
Martinho Goncalves,
Shori Nishizoe and
Jay Trip also all pick up singles wins along with senior
Stan Martherus.
Averett also swept the Marlins in doubles action as Goncalves and Nurminen won at No. 1 doubles while Trip and Martherus earned the win at No. 2 doubles. In the tightest doubles match of the day, the No. 3 doubles slot saw sophomore
Josh Bottrell and junior
Evgeniy Bogdasaryan win 8-7, (7-5).
The Cougars are back in action when they travel to the University of Mary Washington next Sunday at 1 p.m.
