DANVILLE, Va. — Junior
Sarah Marlowe had 20 kills to help Averett University volleyball take down conference foe Randolph College 3-1 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action Wednesday night in the Grant Center.
Averett (9-6, 4-1 ODAC) won 25-19, 18-25, 25-20 and 25-15.
The Cougars raced out to a strong start, taking a 13-4 lead in the opening set. Randolph (9-6, 1-3 ODAC) made a run late before the Cougars finished the WildCats off with a kill from senior
Morgan Barnes.
Averett again opened with an early lead in Set 2 as the Cougars' 5-0 advantage forced a quick Randolph timeout. The WildCats stole the momentum, however, midway through the frame and jumped ahead 20-13 before eventually winning 25-18 to even the match.
Set 3 was a close matchup as well. Tied 11-11, Averett inched ahead 15-11. Randolph stayed within striking distance after a timeout, but the Cougars held off the WildCats down the stretch by a 25-20 margin to go ahead 2-1.
Averett dominated the fourth set to help put Randolph away. The Cougars won eight of the final nine points.
Marlowe totaled 20 kills while hitting .459. Junior
Emma Nash added nine kills, 11 digs and five blocks and junior
Destiny McIntosh added six total blocks. Junior
Erin Gray added 20 digs and sophomore
Kinsley Stevens totaled 24 assists, 11 digs and four service aces for the Cougars.
Averett continues its home stand with Friday's match against Bridgewater College at 6 p.m.
