HAMPTON, Va. — Averett University wrestling finished Day 1 of the Virginia duals, defeating Davis and Elkins College 39-3. The Cougars battled hard in a narrow 17-19 loss to Elizabethtown College.

The Cougars nearly came back against Elizabethtown due to clutch performances from sophomore Khalil Mitchell and redshirt senior Billy Baldwin. In the 184-pound weight class, Mitchell earned a decision to bring the cougars within two points of their opponent. At 197 pounds, Baldwin had a key decision win to put the Cougars up by a point late in the dual.

At 141 pounds, sophomore Wyatt Parker started off with a bang against Davis and Elkins, he defeated Eli Nazelrodt by a 20-3 technical fall.

Sophomore Anthony Taylor was able to clinch a win after winning by a 15-8 decision against Bradden Galassi in the 165-pound weight class.

In the 174-pound weight class, graduate student Alex Turley won by a 10-4 decision against Ethan Barr.

 Mitchell earned the Cougars another win with a 11-8 decision against Michael Schneider.

 Billy Baldwin defeated Michael Schneider by an impressive 14-5 major decision in the 197-pound weight class. 

Heavyweight Junior Jamar Christian won by a 3-0 decision against Garett Eddy.

Against Elizabethtown,sophomore Mason Barrett defeated Ethan Liptzin by a 5-1 decision in the 125-pound weight class.

At 133 pounds, sophomore Daniel Porter defeated Braden Schuyler in a 3-4 tiebreaker.

Sophomore Jesse Alvarado remains undefeated after winning by a 17-2 technical fall against Dorian Gonzalez in the 157-pound weight class.
