DANVILLE, Va.— Averett University men's soccer defeated Roanoke College on Wednesday night 4-2 in a 90-minute thriller to clinch the No. 8 spot in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament on Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.
Averett (6-4-7, 3-3-4 ODAC) was tied up 2-2 in 74th minute up until junior
Oliver Kousholt launched the ball into the back of the net to give the Cougars a 3-2 advantage.
Redshirt senior
Daniel Starr struck first in the match, he booted the ball outside of the top of the box following an assist senior
Alexander Soerensen and junior
Jonthomas Buckley. Roanoke (7-9-2, 5-5-0 ODAC) evened the match up 1-1 in the 52nd minute of play.
Soerensen brought the Cougars back out front two minutes later, he was assisted by senior
Hayden Brown. Senior
Tyler Yates was coming out of the goal to go for a ball and wiped out one of Roanoke's players, resulting in a penalty kick opportunity. Roanoke managed to find the back of the net to bring the score even once more. The Cougar's solidified their victory following a clutch penalty kick by Buckley.
Averett played exceptionally well, 7-for-11 shots were on goal, and maintained possession of the ball for 54 percent of the match.
The Cougars are set to face the No. 1 seed Washington and Lee University on Saturday in Lexington, Virginia.
