DANVILLE, Va. - Averett University women's basketball tested No. 3 Christopher Newport University, keeping close for majority of the game before falling 91-67 to the 2022-23 national runner-up on Wednesday.
With just 3:50 left in the third quarter Averett (0-1) just No. 3 Christopher Newport's (1-0) lead to just seven points. The Captains used a 15-0 scoring run at the end of the third and beginning of the fourth to take the win. The Cougars held CNU to just a 17.4 three-point percentage while Averett had a 42.1 three-point percentage.
Second chance points came in clutch for the Captains as they score 26 points from putbacks while the Cougars scored just three. CNU's bench scored 62 of its 91 points.

Elisa Harris lead Averett in scoring with 15 points. Redshirt freshman
Amore Kirkland had 11 points in her collegiate debut. Averett snagged 35 rebounds while CNU brought down 52.
Averett is back in action this weekend when it faces N.C. Wesleyan at 6 p.m. Saturday on the road.
