DANVILLE, Va. - Averett University women's basketball picked up its first Old Dominion Athletic Conference of the season with an 87-71 win over Eastern Mennonite University on Sunday.
Averett (2-8, 1-3 ODAC) wasted little time before sophomore
Elisa Harris knocked down a three just 37 second into the game. The Cougars opened up on a 14-9 run four minutes into the first quarter over Eastern Mennonite (4-5, 1-3 ODAC). Averett ended the first quarter with a nine-point 23-14 lead over the Royals.
The Cougars offensive dominance continued in the second quarter with Averett sinking six of nine three-pointers from five different Cougars. Averett lead by as much as 19 points in the second before taking a 51-34 lead into the half.
The Royals mounted a comeback early in the third cutting the lead to nine points halfway through the quarter. Averett took just an eight-point lead into the fourth quarter. The Royal outscored the Cougars 26-17 in the third.
Averett's offense came alive in the final 10 minutes of play, scoring 19 points while EMU netted 10 to end the game with a 16-point lead after outlasting EMU 87-71.
 The Cougars had three players score double-digit points in the match-up. Harris netted a team-high 14 points for Averett while pulling down eight rebounds. Senior
Talia Prosper had a second-best 13 points while redshirt-freshman

Taylor Ray each netted two three-pointers for the Cougars. Freshman
Jenkens Ervin had a team-high nine rebounds while chipping in six points.Â
As a team Averett knocked down a season-best 11 three-pointers in the win while shooting 45.8 percent from the three-point line while holding EMU to just 27.3 percent. The Cougars knocked down 24 field goals while shooting 43.6 percent from field goal range. Averett also bested EMU on the boards, out-rebounding the Royals 51-35. A combined 65 fouls were called in the game with three players fouling out.
