NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Averett University men's tennis stunned No. 40 Christopher Newport University in a thrilling 5-4 victory on the road on Friday afternoon.
Averett (3-2, 2-0 ODAC) took the No. 2 doubles point as junior
Rufus Nurminen and sophomore
Martinho Goncalves 8-6 over Christopher Newport's (5-5, 0-0 C2C) Ashton Legum and Alex Seretis .
Headed into singles play, Averett looked to bounce back from it's 2-1 deficit.
The Cougars picked up the equalizing point from Nurminen's straight set 6-1, 6-1 win over Ahun Vodela at No. 3 singles. Shortly after the equalizer, Goncalves won the go-ahead point at push Averett ahead 3-2 with his 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles over Nesh Kumaresan.
CNU tied the match back up at 3-3 by picking up a win at No. 5 singles.
Averett would go up 4-3 right after from sophomore
Shori Nishizoe defeated regionally-ranked Alec Strause 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles.
The Captains equalized the match at 4-4 with their win at No. 2 singles.
Freshman
Prabjeet Chandhok came in clutch for the Cougars at No. 6 singles with his thrilling 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 over Vincent Truong clinching win to complete Averett's 5-4 win over the nationally-ranked Captains.
Averett is back in action tomorrow when they play Rhodes College at CNU at 11 a.m.
