DANVILLE, Va. - Regionally-ranked Averett University men's tennis reeled in an 8-1 win at home on Sunday over conference opponent Virginia Wesleyan University in Senior Day.
Averett (11-4, 7-2 ODAC) started oof the match strong with a complete sweep of the doubles points over Virginia Wesleyan (8-6, 5-3 ODAC).
Regionally-ranked No. 10 doubles duo of sophomore
Shori Nishizoe and senior
Jorge Figueroa earned Averett's first point of the match with their 8-5 win over Felix Bevc and Francis Cabaddu at the #2 slot. At #1 sophomore
Martinho Goncalves and junior
Rufus Nurminen defeated Alen Curovic and Hubert Parawa 8-5 to win their sixth-straight doubles match. Freshman team of
Kazuki Fukushima and
Prabjeet Chandhok sealed the Cougars' sweep of doubles with a comeback 8-5 thriller.
Figueroa defeated Hubert Parawa 6-4, 6-2 at #2 singles to earn his second victory on his Senior Day. At #3 singles Nurminen used a thriling second set to earn the victory over 6-0, 7-6 (7-5). Nishizoe picked up a 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) win over Felix Bevc at the #1 slot. Chandhok swept past Jonas Juetz 6-0, 6-0 at #5 to earn his eighth-straight singles win.
Averett is back in action when it travels to University of Lynchburg on Wednesday at 12 p.m.
