LYNCHBURG, Va. — Averett University's men's tennis team rolled past the University of Lynchburg 5-0 Wednesday in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play.
Averett (12-4, 8-1 ODAC), ranked No. 12 in the region, got off to a strong start with three wins in doubles play. At No. 2, the No. 9 regionally-ranked team of sophomore
Shori Nishizoe and senior
Jorge Figueroa won 8-6. Freshmen
Prabjeet Chandhok and
Kazuki Fukushima added an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles. The tandem of junior
Rufus Nurminen and sophomore
Martinho Goncalves, battled to take No. 1 doubles, 8-7 (7-2).
Figueroa won his No. 2 singles match 6-3, 2-6, 6-1. Meanwhile, Nurminen won at No. 3 singles 6-3, 6-2, which clinched the match to beat Lynchburg (12-6, 6-3 ODAC). Nishizoe, ranked No. 19 in the region in singles, finished off his matchup with a win, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (11-9).
Averett travels to play non-conference foe Methodist University on Saturday to finish the regular season.
