Women's tennis coasts to ODAC quarterfinal victory over Lynchburg

DANVILLE, Va. - Averett University women's tennis team downed the University of Lynchburg 5-1 on Tuesday at home to advance to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals, while keeping the Hornets from advancing to the semifinals for the first time since 2017.

Averett (14-3) stole two of the three points from Lynchburg (11-8). Junior Paula Ryhsen and senior Alejandra Garcia earned the Cougars their first point of the match with an 8-0 sweep over Lara Karrass and Alexa Hardesty at #2 doubles. Freshman Elisa Battermann and junior Daniela Poulakidas teamed up at #3 doubles for an 8-1 victory over Ashley Hair and Reese McAtee. Lynchburg picked up its lone point of the match in a comeback 8-6 victory at #1 doubles.

Freshman Amelie Brune swept Jordan Ottaviano 6-0, 6-0 at #6 singles to earn Averett's fourth point, while Daniela Poulakidas downed Grace Teefey 6-0, 6-1 at the #5 slot. Garcia clinched the decisive fifth point for hte Cougars with her 6-2, 6-3 victory over Alexa Hardesty.

Averett is back in action when it plays Sweet Briar College in the ODAC Tournament Semifinals on Saturday hosted at Washington and Lee University.
