LEXINGTON, Va.- Regionally-ranked No.12 Averett University men's tennis advanced to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament Championship with its 5-1 semifinal win over Guilford College on Saturday.
Averett (14-4) swept all three doubles points from Guilford (8-10). Its first point came from the #2 doubles team of freshman
Kazuki Fukushima and senior
Jorge Figueroa, taking down Drake Schreiber and Rishi Halukurike in a commanding 8-1 victory. #1 doubles pairing of sophomore
Shori Nishizoe and junior
Rufus Nurminen topped Andres Mercedes and Tye Sasser 8-6. At #3 doubles, freshmen duo of
Theodor Garmo and
Prabjeet Chandhok completed the sweep with their thrilling 8-7(12-10) win over Evan Wong and Rylan Tuten.
Figueroa claimed Averett its fourth point of the match in his 6-0, 6-3 win over Schreiber. Freshman
Sam Egui clinched the match for Averett with his 6-4, 7-5 win over Dominik Pocrnja. Guilford picked up at win at #3 singles due to retirement.
Averett is back in action at 1 p.m. Sunday for the ODAC championship against Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia.
