MARYVILLE, Tenn. — Averett University men's soccer defeated Covenant College 1-0 on Friday night in its opening matchup at the Maryville College Fall Classic.
Averett (3-1-1) scored early on in the match when redshirt senior
Daniel Starr booted the ball into top left of the net following a pass from senior
Alexander Soerensen to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead over Covenant (2-2-3) in the 21st minute.
The Cougars had five shots on goal in the match. The Averett defense kept the Scots off the board. Senior
Tyler Yates went 80 minutes in goal before Soerensen took over as the emergency goalkeeper with the Cougars' other keepers unavailable. Soerensen recorded two saves in addition to his assist in the contest.
The Cougars return to play on Saturday when they face host Maryville at 6 p.m.
