MARYVILLE, Tenn. — Averett University men's soccer scored the equalizer in the 86th minute to earn a thrilling 2-2 draw with Maryville College on the second day of the Maryville Fall Classic on Saturday evening.
Down 2-0, Averett (3-1-2) pulled back within a goal in the 63rd minute when redshirt senior
Daniel Starr scored to the top left of the frame for his second goal in as many days. It appeared as though the host Scots were going to hold on for a non-conference victory. However, Starr and the Cougars had other plans.
In the 86th minute, a corner kick from the left side into the box eventually found Starr, who again sent it to the back of the net for his second goal of the night to knot the match, 2-2.
Both teams had a shot in the final minute, but both were off target.
For Averett, it was the second time this season it has scored an equalizing goal in the final five minutes.
The Cougars outshot Maryville (3-2-3) 27-11, including 9-6 on shots on goal.
The Scots grabbed momentum at the start, taking the lead quickly as Hyatt MacDonald scored in the fourth minute. Craig McIlwraith found MacDonald, who slotted it in the bottom left of the net.
Averett's defense kept Maryville without a shot on goal until early in the second half. The Scots added a second goal in the 58th minute when Aidan McWilliams scored unassisted to put Maryville in front 2-0.
For Starr, a Virginia Tech transfer, he now has four goals in three games.
Sophomore
Anibal Lopez, making his first career start and first match appearance as a Cougar, had four saves in goal.
Averett begins Old Dominion Athletic Conference play on Wednesday when the Cougars travel to Guilford College for a 7 p.m. start.
