Men's tennis opens play at ITA Southeast Regionals

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — Averett University men's tennis opened up play Friday at the ITA Fall Regionals hosted by the University of Mary Washington.
 
In the Championship Singles flight, sophomore Alex Donnelly dropped his Round of 64 match with Johns Hopkins University's Daniel Ardila, the No. 12 seed who won 7-6 (7-5), 6-2. Freshman Alex Rudy also lost his first round match to Stevens Institute of Technology's Vivekraj Harinarayan, who won 3-6, 6-4, 10-7.
 
Donnelly will head to the Championship Consolation, where he'll face Washington College's Aaradith Ravichandran on Saturday at 11 a.m. Rudy is also in the Championship Consolation at 11 a.m. against Franklin & Marshall College's Zac Ashtiani.
In the B1 Singles Draw, junior Jaedon Mukkaladyil won his opening match 8-6 against Swarthmore College's Aadhi Raja, but fell 8-5 in the quarterfinals to Washington and Lee University's Sanjheev Rao.
 
In the B2 Singles Draw, sophomore Prabjeet Chandhok dropped his Round of 16 matchup with Christopher Newport University's Gus Mitchell 8-4.
 
In the B3 Singles Draw, sophomore Kazuki Fukushima won his opening match 8-3 over Muhlenberg College's Matthew Miller but fell 8-0 to Franklin & Marshall's Gonzalo Gentou in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, freshman Gero Siebert fell 8-4 to Franklin & Marshall's Soren Ruden-Aulenbach in the same flight.
 
Earlier in the day, the Cougars started competition in doubles play. In the Championship Doubles Draw, the tandem of Donnelly and Rudy beat Washington and Lee's James Kurani and Connor Coleman 8-6 in the Round of 64. They lost the next round 8-5 to Christopher Newport's Vincent Truong and Bhuvanesh Kumaresan.

In the B1 Doubles draw Fukushima and Mukkaladyil teamed up to take down Owen Dyer and Matthew Miller of Muhlenberg College 8-0 in their opening match. In their quarterfinal match the two took down Alen Curovic and Rafael Rullan of Virginia Wesleyan University 8-7 (8-6) to advance to the semifinals at 8 a.m. tomorrow. Siebert and Chandhok fell to Aron Bursztyn and Russell Willenborg of Salisbury University.
