DANVILLE, Va. – Averett University women's basketball fell to Randolph College 59-34 on Saturday.
Averett honored its three seniors prior to the game.
Averett (4-16, 2-11 ODAC) opened up the first quarter with a 6-0 run in the opening two minutes and thirty seconds to force a Randolph College (12-7, 6-7 ODAC) timeout. The WildCats scored five-straight points, bringing them within one. Randolph took its first lead 12-10, prompting an 11-0 run in the final four minutes of the first quarter, entering the second leading 19-10.
Senior Talia Prosper ended the Cougars scoring drought scoring on back-to-back plays from a driving layup and a three-pointer from the top of the key. The WildCats took a 33-21 lead into halftime.
Randolph opened the second half with an 18-2 run in the third quarter. Averett's lone third quarter basket came from sophomore Brianna Sams at the 6:58 mark.
Averett held the WildCats to just eight points in the fourth quarter while the Cougars tallied 11.
Prosper led the Cougars with a team-high 11 points and five rebounds. Senior Jihnez Hutchinson had a team-high 12 rebounds. Senior Natija Pate and freshman Emma Jones each had a second-best six points.
Averett is back in action next on Saturday at Shenandoah with a 2 p.m. tipoff.
