DANVILLE, Va. – The start of Homecoming Weekend provided sparks for Averett University men's soccer, as a four-goal second half resulted in 2-2 draw against Eastern Mennonite University on Saturday afternoon.
With little time remaining in the second period,
Oliver Kousholt sent a left-footed powering strike past the keeper, giving Averett (3-5-6, 0-4-3 ODAC) a shot at the win, but the score held at the final whistle.
The Cougars offense broke through after a barrage of shots on goal in the first half, with senior
Daniel Starr rifling a shot to the bottom left corner to put the home team up 1-0 in the 66th minute.
Kaden Schrock for the Royals countered roughly 10 minutes later, as he found his way to goal. He capped off the solo effort to equalize for Eastern Mennonite (5-4-7, 1-2-4 ODAC) in the 75th.
The Royals seized the 2-1 lead with just under five minutes left to play. After a shot from the visitors was sent on goal, the ball ricocheted off the crossbar and went off the chest of Schrock, rolling into the back of the net.
As a team, the Cougars set a season-high in total shots and shots on goal, with 28 and 12, respectively. Graduate student goalkeeper
Tyler Yates made three crucial saves in the tie.
Next up, Averett plays its last home game of the season on Wednesday, Oct. 23, with a contest versus Guilford College. Kickoff will follow shortly after the conclusion of the women's soccer contest at Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium, approximately at 7 p.m.
