Women's volleyball wins home regular season finale with sweep of Randolph

DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University women's volleyball swept Randolph College 3-0 on Wednesday night, giving the Cougars' seniors a memorable win in their final regular season home match at the Grant Center.

Averett (12-14, 6-5 ODAC) dominated Randolph (12-13, 3-7 ODAC) by scores of 25-15, 25-17 and 25-18.

A tight first set quickly went the Cougars' way as Averett turned an 11-10 lead into a 17-10 advantage with junior Dayton Moore at serve. Although Randolph temporarily closed the gap to 17-13, Averett pilled on five consecutive points to help the Cougars cruise to a 1-0 lead in the match.

Averett's momentum carried over into Set 2 as the Cougars rolled out to a 12-2 lead on their way to a 2-0 advantage. Randolph held a brief lead in Set 3 before Averett finished off the WildCats to earn the sweep.

Although it was a sentimental night for Averett's seniors, it was a sophomore who provided the pop as Sydney Mounce totaled a team-high 18 kills in the win. Senior Julianna Erickson and graduate student Emma Nash each added nine kills for the offense, which finished with a whopping .355 hitting percentage as a team. Fifth-year libero Erin Gray had 20 digs, senior setter Kinsley Stevens had 23 assists and seven digs and Moore had 18 assists. Senior Destiny McIntosh totaled 10 digs and five kills. Erickson and sophomore Allie Wilkerson each tallied four blocks, with Nash making three blocks as Averett totaled 14 blocks as a team.

Averett travels to ODAC foe Virginia Wesleyan University on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. matchup.
