LEXINGTON, Va. – Averett University men's soccer made their way north for an away conference contest versus 2023 NCAA semifinalists Washington and Lee University. The Cougars fought valiantly for 90 minutes to a 2-2 draw, as freshman
Daniel Sierra secured a brace.
The enthralling outing between the squads continued on into the later minutes, as Washington and Lee (6-3-1, 3-0-1 ODAC) equalized in the 80th. Trian Kechagias knocked one through into the low left corner to tie the game at two, and the result held after the full-time whistle blew.
The Generals grabbed a 1-0 lead within the first minute of play, as Will Luik set up teammate Dmitri Tulloch for the score, placed into the bottom right corner.
A 26th minute replacement paid dividends for Averett (3-4-4, 0-3-1 ODAC), as substitute Sierra pounced on a cross from
Max Gaudry, and slotted the ball past the keeper to level the contest at one apiece in the 27th.
The freshman continued his stellar outing with a goal in the 65th minute. After the Generals backline cleared out a header, Sierra slotted in the rebound to put the visiting team into the lead. His double marked the first by a Cougar since Sept. 7 at Brevard, when
Daniel Lilley knotted a brace versus the Tornados.
Averett compiled six shots total, with half of those on goal.
Tyler Yates managed his third straight game with six or more saves, breaking his season-high with seven.
The Cougars return to conference action next Saturday, Oct. 12, hosting Shenandoah University on what will be Senior Day for the men's soccer seniors. The ceremony will be held before kickoff, which is set for 2 p.m.
