WINCHESTER, Va. — Averett University women's soccer took the long trip north to play conference foe Shenandoah University and walked away with a 3-1 loss to the Hornets.
Averett (1-5-2, 0-2-0 ODAC) trotted out a lineup with some new names in new places in hopes of creating a spark within the team. The Cougars held steady early before Shenandoah (6-5-1, 1-1-0 ODAC) broke the ice on a well placed shot off of a corner kick. The Hornets would go on to extend their lead to 2-0 before the half, as Averett was called for a handball in the box, with Shenandoah capitalizing on the ensuing penalty.
The Cougars clawed their way back into the contest thanks to career goal number one for freshman
Isabel Semb. Semb arced a perfect ball over the Shenandoah keeper who had ventured off her line, as an excellent through ball from senior
Celia de Diego caught the Hornets' defense flat-footed. Shenandoah would respond with a goal as the clock wound down, sending the game to its final 3-1 scoreline.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Tiia Chrons stopped six shots in her first action of the season, while the Cougars' front line of de Diego, Semb, and sophomore
Leah Brethren accounted for one shot each for Averett.
Averett women's soccer returns to home turf to take on the No. 20 Washington and Lee University squad on Wednesday, Oct. 9, at 6 p.m.
