ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – Averett University women's basketball opened up play at the N.C. Wesleyan/Jean Edge Classic Saturday, and was dealt a 101-46 loss to No. 6 ranked Johns Hopkins University.
The Bluejays' offense hummed through two quarters, but Averett began to find some rhythm in the second quarter. More than tripling their output from the first period,
Jaa Brown and
Brianna Sams paced the Cougars with four points each in the second. Johns Hopkins led 60-17 heading into halftime.
The second half was more evenly contested between the squads, including a fourth quarter where Averett only trailed by one, 19-18. Johns Hopkins, however, prevailed through the last two quarters, en route to the 101-46 win.
Transfer sophomore
Zariia America and teammate Sams paced the Cougars, leading Averett with 12 points each. Sams had her best game of the season for rebounds thus far, with a team-high eight.
Emily Kusnic, in her first start, led in assists with three, and duo DiaShaundria Giggetts and Sams led in steals with two apiece.
Averett wraps up the Jean Edge Classic tomorrow night, taking on hosts N.C. Wesleyan University. Tip-off versus the Battling Bishops is set for 5 p.m.
