The Series: Averett and Hollins have logged 18 contests between each other, with the Cougars holding the slight edge, 10-8. Hollins has momentum on its side, however, winning the past two contests, including a 63-53 victory last January in Danville.
Averett at a Glance: Averett University women's basketball stayed steady through three quarters at Randolph College on Wednesday night, but a final quarter surge from the WildCats led to a 66-59 defeat in Lynchburg, Virginia. Averett kept its foot on the gas, assured with a 10-0 run to begin the third period. Back to back three-pointers from Jones and
Jaa Brown helped the Cougars to break open the game, distancing themselves away from the WildCats with their largest lead of the night, 45-31 with under five minutes left. Randolph stormed back, making a trio of shots from beyond the arc in the midst of a 15-8 run to end the period only down by five. Averett led 51-46 going into the critical final quarter. The home team would tie the contest up at 51, as Renee Clines continued her hot night, up to 16 points. Clines would score once more to bring the WildCats back into the lead, their first since early in the first period. From that point on, Randolph pulled away and its lead was too much to overcome for the Cougars, falling 66-59. Giggetts finished the night with a team-high 20 points, five rebounds, and two steals. Jones rounded out the game with 12 points and six rebounds, most amongst the Cougars. As a team, Averett won the rebound margin 40-35, 29 of those being defensive. The Cougars only missed three free throws, going 10-13 overall.
Hollins at a Glance: Hollins was back in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play after a break for the Thanksgiving holiday when they hosted Lynchburg on Wednesday night. The Green and Gold would lead for much of the first half before seeing the Hornets up 29-27 at the break. Hollins immediately retook the advantage and built their second half lead to as many as six points. However, Lynchburg would mount a late rally, scoring 14 of the final 16 points of the night to pick up the 61-54. conference win. Sarah Morales pushed the lead to 50-45 with just over seven-minutes left to play. Hollins clung to a two-point lead at the final media timeout only to see an 11-2 finish by the Hornets for the seven-point win, 61-54. Morales matched her career high with 21 points on 9-17 shooting. The sophomore guard added six rebounds and five assists while Cabria Mutz finished with 12 points, 14 rebounds, and six blocked shots. Zaria Holden had 10 points with four assists and Noelani Carter registered five points and handed out six helpers.
