HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, N.C. — Averett University men's tennis finished off the regular season with an 8-1 road win at Hampden-Sydney College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action on Saturday.
Averett (8-7, 7-2 ODAC) took a 1-0 lead in doubles play with an 8-2 win at No. 2 from junior
Jaeden Mukkaladyil and sophomore
Kazuki Fukushima. After Hampden-Sydney (6-13, 4-5 ODAC) inched out an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles, the Cougars got a tight win at No. 1 from sophomores
Alex Donnelly and
Prabjeet Chandhok, who won 8-7 (7-1).
Averett clinched the match with straight-set wins at the last three singles spots from Fukushima, freshman
Alex Rudy and freshman
Gero Siebert. Mukkaladyil also won at No. 2 and Chandhok won at No. 3 in straight sets. Donnelly put the exclamation point on the victory by winning 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8) at No. 1 singles to complete the sweep of the Tigers in singles play.
Averett awaits seeding for the ODAC Tournament, which begins on Tuesday. The Cougars will likely host a matchup in the first round at 2 p.m.
