Late goal helps men’s soccer earn draw at Randolph-Macon

ASHLAND, Va. – With time ticking down late in the second half, heroics from Daniel Sierra helped Averett University men's soccer salvage a 1-1 draw at Randolph-Macon on Wednesday night.

With momentum still in favor of Randolph-Macon (4-1-1), Averett (3-1-3) fought to draw a corner after the 85th minute. Sierra got a hold of a ball from senior midfielder Jonthomas Buckley, placing a high left shot behind the goalkeeper to knot the contest at 1-1, a result that held at the full-time whistle.

After a competitive, but scoreless first period, the Yellow Jackets got on the board first in the 51st minute, shortly following a foul that occurred inside of the penalty box. Dylan Matheny converted from 12 yards out to place the home team into the lead.

Both squads created a number of chances throughout 90 minutes, totaling 32 shots. The Cougars had the edge with 17, also including more shots on goal with six. Tyler Yates kept his net locked down, tallying three saves.

Averett opens Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play next Wednesday, Sept. 25 at Ferrum College. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
