GREENVILLE, S.C. — Averett University women's soccer fell to Bob Jones University on the road, 4-1, as senior
Celia de Diego set Averett's all-time goals record.
Averett (1-3-2) started off strong after the long trip to Bob Jones (6-3-0) as the Cougars opened the scoring. Junior
Isobel Evans swung a beautiful cross into the box, where de Diego was able to connect on a header to vault the Cougars into the lead, and to vault de Diego into solo possession of first-place in Averett's program record book.
"I'm happy to do my part for the team and thankful to be able to show our hard work by setting a new standard," de Diego said. " Isobel made a great move to get rid of her mark and make the cross. I could not have asked for a better cross, it got right to my head in between three players, and I just had to finish it."Â
Averett carried a 1-0 advantage into the halftime break on the back of de Diego's record breaker, before the script flipped in the final 45 minutes of action. The Bruins came out of the intermission a new team, finding the stride they had been hitting coming into the match, having scored 12 goals in their two prior contests. Bob Jones rattled off four unanswered goals to stymie the Cougars and send the game to its 4-1 final tally.
The Bruins out shot Averett 22-9 in the game, as senior
Tiffany Hargett logged five saves for the Cougars. All of Averett's offensive efforts were powered by the goal scoring duo of de Diego and Evans, as the two accounted for five shots and four shots respectively.
Averett is back at it on home turf, as the Cougars have little time to dwell on the loss, with Randolph College set to come to town on Friday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m.
