Game Notes: Averett vs. Shenandoah
The Series: Shenandoah holds the advantage in the all-time series versus Averett, 33-15. The last few matchups have been almost even, with the Cougars snatching two of the last five games between the squads, but the Hornets have been victorious in the past three. Last time the two teams met, Shenandoah won 80-51 in Winchester last February.
Averett at a Glance: DaiShaundria Giggetts continued to put up numbers with her third straight 20-point outing, rallying the Cougars back in an away contest at Roanoke College, but the comeback fell just short, falling to the Maroons 68-61 on Saturday afternoon. Averett had a chance to tie again in the dying seconds, but Emma Jones' three-pointer was blocked, and Roanoke grabbed possession. With the advantage, the Maroons played the foul game to sink multiple free throws, as the Cougars fell just short of the victory, 68-61. Along with a game-high 22 points, Giggetts filled the stat sheet with seven rebounds, and led the team in assists and steals with four and six, respectively. America fell just short of a double-double, amassing 11 points and nine rebounds. Coleman reached double-digit scoring figures for the second time this season with 10 points, also adding on three steals. As a team, the Cougars led the offensive rebounding margin, 19-18, and in steals, 15-10.
Shenandoah at a Glance: The Shenandoah University women's basketball team faced a tough road contest to kick off the new year, falling to Guilford College 66-54 in their first conference setback of the season. Despite the loss, senior guard Terese Greene led the Hornets with 17 points, four rebounds, two assists, and a steal.  Greene went 5-for-18 from the field, connected on one of four attempts from beyond the arc, and was stellar from the free-throw line, hitting six of seven shots. Despite a spirited effort in the fourth quarter, including contributions from Jessica Littlejohn and Banks, the Hornets were unable to close the gap as Guilford extended their lead to 20 points at one stage. Shenandoah's late push reduced the margin but fell short of mounting a full comeback.
