BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Staring down the barrel of defeat with little time remaining,
Hudson Bradley scored in the waning moments to help Averett University men's soccer draw at Bridgewater College on Saturday afternoon.
On the brink of losing with less than five minutes to go,
Alvaro Alvarez del Rio made a move past a defender, then provided the through ball from midfield that found its way to Bradley on the left, who then rocketed a right-footed shot into the top right corner to equalize for Averett (3-4-4, 1-2 ODAC) at 2-2.
Goal-scoring opportunities found Averett first, as sophomore midfielder
Fernando Pintos put the visitors on the board early through a wild free kick. An intended cross into a crowded box somehow sailed past every Eagle defender, and into the back of the net untouched. Only seven minutes in, the Cougars leaped to a 1-0 lead.
In-form Trey Widrick scored his second goal in two games to equalize for Bridgewater (8-2-2, 3-0-2 ODAC), only four minutes later with a booming header into the left corner. With much more contest to play, the ODAC squads found themselves knotted at a goal apiece, and would remain the same at the end of the first period.
The Cougars' star goalkeeper in
Anibal Lopez faced action between the sticks, once more provided the clutch defensive stand that helped grant Averett the draw with six saves.
The Cougars next travel to nearby Greensboro, North Carolina to battle Guilford College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play on Wednesday, Oct. 15. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
