Cross country crosses line at NCAA South Regional

SALEM, Va. — Averett University cross country competed in the NCAA South Regional on Saturday.

Averett's men took to the course first, with two entries representing the Cougars. Junior Azael Quintero led the way, placing 138th with an 8K run of 30:07.70. Freshman Brett Foley closed out the Averett men's action with a time of 35:03.20 for 163rd-place. The University of Lynchburg's Alex Jordan took home the individual crown with a time of 24:15.20, while Washington and Lee University earned the team title.

The Cougars' women's team ran second today, placing 21st out of 26 total entries. Junior Gabrielle Griffin led the team as the Danville, Virginia, native scored a 53rd-place finish with a personal best time of 24:03.00. Senior Alheli Ramos-Garcia finished at the second best Cougar, coming away with a 108th-place result after a time of 26:03.80. Senior Kailey Gates closed out Averett's top-three with a time of 28:03.70, placing her 144th overall. Washington and Lee's Olivia Warr took home the individual crown with a time of 21:00.70, while Emory University secured the women's team title.

That's a wrap on the 2025 season for Averett cross country, as the Cougars' runners will now focus on the upcoming indoor and outdoor track and field seasons.
