Men's basketball takes down Shenandoah for ODAC road victory

WINCHESTER, Va. — Four Cougars scored in double figures as Averett University men's basketball built a double-digit lead and never looked back in a 74-59 road win over Shenandoah University on Saturday afternoon.

Averett (5-2, 1-1 ODAC) opened with a 9-3 advantage in the opening minutes, and the Cougars held the lead for a bulk of the first period. Four Averett players had at least seven points in the first half as the Cougars took a 37-27 lead into halftime.

Shenandoah (6-2, 0-2 ODAC) got a basket to start the second half, but Averett rattled off nine consecutive points to push its lead back to double digits. The Cougars kept the Hornets at a distance the rest of the way for their fifth win in the last six games.

Sophomore Jackson Sellars returned to score a team-high 18 points, while redshirt sophomore Timayahs Bracey finished with 17 points. Freshman Tyler Stephens notched a career-high for the second game in a row, scoring 15 points while grabbing five rebounds. Junior Josh Seiler also scored in double figures with 10 points. Sophomore Mason Mitchell had a team-best 11 boards and three assists for Averett.

Averett returns home to face Warren Wilson College on Dec. 10 at 5 p.m.
