Giggetts sets new program record as women’s basketball loses season finale at No. 17 Randolph-Macon

ASHLAND, Va. – Freshman guard/forward DaiShaundria Giggetts broke a program record in the process as Averett University women's basketball fell in its season finale at No. 17 Randolph-Macon College, 66-50, on Saturday afternoon.

Randolph-Macon (24-1, 16-0 ODAC) were stymied somewhat to start, only making a few field goals with a litany of attempts, but outpaced Averett (4-21, 2-14 ODAC) by 10 points, 18-8, through the first period. Giggetts did her best to keep the Cougars fighting, scoring all of the team's points thus far.

The second was competitive between the two sides, with the visitors Averett giving the ranked Yellow Jackets a great deal of a fight. Despite being down as much as 19 with under two minutes until halftime intermission, the Cougars braced on a 5-0 run to end the quarter, all in part to Emma Jones.

The second quarter alone was Jones' best performance in a 10-minute span, scoring 11 points with three made from behind the arc.

Randolph-Macon's dominant third period gave leeway to round out the contest, even with the Cougars outscoring the Yellow Jackets through the fourth quarter 22-16. Jones and Jaa Brown highlighted with eight and seven points respectively, but Randolph-Macon were able to lock up the 66-50 victory on its respective Senior Day.

Jones, for the second time in as many contests, set more career bests in both points and 3-pointers made. The sophomore guard tallied 19 points and five threes, also game-highs between both teams. Giggetts' five steals officially surpassed Laurnel Fountain from the 1989-90 season for most steals in a season in program history, finishing the year with 91.

Giggetts also recorded her first double-double in collegiate play, with 15 points and a new career-high in rebounds, with 11, and set a new high in blocks with three. Brown tied for the game-high in assists, with five, and accrued three steals.

Averett out-shined Randolph-Macon from the free-throw line making three more than its counterparts (8-5).

The Cougars conclude the 2024-25 season at 4-21, 2-14 in ODAC contests.
