DANVILLE, Va. – In a rematch from October of 2023, Averett University came out on the winning end versus Division-II Shaw University, 4-1, on Wednesday afternoon.
Averett's (4-2) strength in doubles depth carried through early on, sweeping all matches to clinch the first point. Already secured, the No. 2 Cougar duo of
Sam Egui and
Rafael Jodas took some pride heading into singles, beating Shaw's (1-4) Eduardo Valenca and Carlos Alcala 7-6, and then 7-4 in the deciding tiebreak
.
Jaeden Mukkaladyil kicked off singles with a 6-2, 6-2 dismantling of Alcala, before the Bears replied back at No. 3 singles, with Franco Vedda taking down
Prabjeet Chandhok, 7-5, 6-4. Averett then sealed the deal from opposite ends of the lineup, with No. 1
Satwik Kollepalli grinding his result out in three sets, besting Valenca 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Alex Donnelly at No. 5 closed out action versus Scott Ndengoue 6-2, 6-1 to earn the Cougars their fourth win of the year.
Averett has now won two straight matches versus Division-II foes, including its win over Johnson C. Smith University last spring.
The Cougars resume ODAC play on Sunday, March 16, taking on Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia. Start time, amongst imminent weather, is set for 1 p.m.
