Equestrian IHSA named team champion, places third in region

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Averett University's IHSA team traveled to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro for the last regular season show on Saturday, and Regionals on Sunday. Averett was awarded Champion Team on Saturday and placed third in the region on Sunday. Senior Paige Johnson was Regional Champion in Open Flat and will move onto Zones. Johnson was also given the Sportsmanship Award.

Saturday started off with Over Fences classes. Johnson had a nice ride in Open Fences and was awarded second place. Sophomore Megan McClelland-Clayton rode in Intermediate Fences with a lovely ride, winning first place. In Limit Fences, freshman Carly Williams had a good ride, placing third and accumulated enough points to move onto Regionals.

Next were the Flat Classes. In Open Flat, Johnson had another nice ride, receiving second place and securing a spot at Regionals. For Intermediate Flat, McClelland-Clayton put forth a great effort in a very competitive class, placing sixth. Williams had a beautiful ride in Limit Flat, winning first place and moving on to Regionals. In Novice Flat, freshman Elize Idén rode well and received third place, having enough points to move on to Regionals. Last but not least was sophomore Abigail Sander in Intro Flat. She had an awesome ride, winning first place and moving on to Regionals.

The Regional Competition was started off by Johnson in Open Flat. She had a beautiful ride and won first place, being awarded Regional Champion and securing a place at Zones. Williams had a very nice ride in Limit Fences, placing third. She also rode in Limit Flat, doing well in a very competitive class and placing sixth. Idén competed in the Novice Flat with a very technical ride, placing sixth. Sander competed in Intro Flat and had a good ride, placing fourth.
