GREENSBORO, N.C. — Averett University softball lost a pair of conference matchups at Guilford College on Tuesday. The Cougars fell 3-2 and 8-4.
Averett (17-21, 8-12 ODAC) took a hard-luck loss in the opening game. Despite taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on sophomore
Kadence Woodlief's RBI single to center, Guilford (16-22, 7-13 ODAC) took advantage of an error on a single to the outfield that allowed two runs to come home as the Quakers jumped ahead 2-1.
Sophomore
Ally Testerman's RBI triple knotted the game at 2-2 in the fourth, but Averett surrendered another run on a sacrifice fly in the fifth to allow Guilford to reclaim the lead. The Quakers held on to win following a 30-minute weather delay between the sixth and seventh innings.
In Game 2, Averett again struck first. Woodlief's RBI single to shortstop put the Cougars ahead 1-0, and senior
Angela Rodriguez followed several batters later with a two-run single through the left side to give Averett a 3-0 advantage in the first inning. However, Guilford answered in the second inning with four runs, including two on a double to left-center and two more on another Averett error.
Up 4-3, Guilford tacked on another run on an RBI double in the third. An RBI single and a bunt double coupled with an error in the fifth helped the Quakers up their lead to 7-3.
Sophomore
Carson Bradsher inched Averett within 7-4 in the sixth with an RBI groundout to score senior
Hannah Jones, but it wasn't enough late. Guilford scored again in the bottom of the sixth to pull away.
Averett finishes the regular season at Bridgewater College on Saturday.
