DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University women's soccer played out a draw against the visiting Salem College Spirits, with the scoreboard knotted up at 3-3 as the final whistle sounded.
Averett (1-0-1) started off strong yet again as the Cougars scored early on Salem (0-1-1). Junior
Madie Pedraza started off the game's scoring with a banger of a goal from outside the 18-yard box, a high-speed bullet of a shot, tucked right under the crossbar, that left the Spirits' keeper hapless in defense of her net. The Cougars' second goal came off a corner kick, with senior
Isobel Evans stepping up and delivering a beautiful in-swinging ball to the right foot of freshman
Isabella Kelly, who tapped the ball in to extend Averett's lead to 2-0. Salem fought back valiantly to draw level with Averett, as the Spirits snuck two balls through the Cougars' defense to send the game to the half at a 2-2 stalemate.
Averett regained the lead after a run of back and forth play to open the second half. Evans snuck in behind the defense and took control of a ball deflected off a Salem defender, took her time in front of goal, and laced a shot past the lonesome Spirits netminder to vault Averett back ahead in the match. Unfortunately for the Cougars' home supporters, the lead would not hold at 3-2, as Salem's star striker earned a penalty kick, and a fellow Spirit would capitalize on the opportunity to tie the match back up at 3-3. Averett showed both skill and urgency in the closing minutes, mounting chance after chance in the match's final moments. Averett amassed 19 shots in the contest, but the Salem defense remained stout in the face of Averett's late pressure, leading the game to its 3-3 final score.
The Cougars will be back in action on their home turf once again, this time welcoming the Pride of Greensboro College for a Saturday, Sept. 6, 5 p.m. clash.
