DANVILLE, Va. – Averett University women's soccer dropped its home contest with Greensboro College after a hard fought 90 minutes came to a close with Greensboro ahead 4-1.
Averett (1-1-1) fell for the first time this season as Greensboro (2-0-1) emerged victorious in the matchup of former conference foes.
The visiting Pride acclimated quickly to their road test, scoring two goals in the opening half to establish a lead. Greensboro kept heavy pressure on the Cougars throughout the half, controlling play and limiting Averett's offensive opportunities with a well executed high press. The referee's whistle sounded for the halftime break with the score in favor of the Pride, 2-0.
The Cougars' halftime adjustments helped quell Greensboro's attack as the second half of play began, but the Pride still managed to sneak two goals past the defense and into Averett's net. The Cougars struck for a goal in the game's late stages, thanks to a brilliant cross from freshman
Delaney Haymore and a clinical finish from senior
Gianna Minafo. The goal marked Averett's only scoring play, as the game concluded with a 4-1 final score in Greensboro's favor.Â
Averett women's soccer is back in action on home turf on Wednesday at 6 p.m. to take on Methodist University.
