FAYETTEVILLE, N.C – Defense was on display for Averett University men's soccer on Saturday, drawing 0-0 at Methodist University.
Averett (2-2-3) was stymied on offensive through the first half, as Methodist's (3-2-4) only real chance came in the early stages. Just two minutes in, Carson Stretz had a prime chance on goal, but in-form goalkeeper
Anibal Lopez forced the save to end any threat.
Both teams starred in a very defensive-dominated first period.
The Cougars did muster up slightly more offense in the second half, but the Monarchs pressed on in their offensive zone. Highlighted by five more stops by the senior net-stopper Lopez, including one as the clock ticked under a minute, the Cougars held on for their second straight draw.
Averett finished off an undefeated week, as Lopez recorded his second straight clean sheet, and third overall in 2025. Lopez finished the contest with six saves.
The Cougars kick off Old Dominion Athletic Conference action next Saturday, Sept. 20, hosting Hampden-Sydney College, who is receiving votes in the latest Division III United Soccer Coaches poll. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
