DANVILLE, Va. – Averett University men's soccer saw its opening unbeaten streak snapped to visiting Pfeiffer University, as the Falcons shut out the Cougars 3-0 on Wednesday night at Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.
Pfeiffer (2-0-0) survived a barrage of offensive pressure from Averett (1-1-1), as the opposing netminder Seth Limbert stopped a pair of shots early on. The Falcons pounced in the 28th minute for the 1-0 lead, as Wesley Hooker snuck an attempt into the bottom on what was only the team's second shot of the half.
Anibal Lopez netted a trio of stops to keep the visitors at bay, as Averett only trailed by the single goal going into the last 45 minutes.
It took only five minutes into the second period for Pfeiffer to double its advantage, with Jaiden Wright at the call for the Falcons in the 50th minute. The away team tacked on a third to seal the win, and sent the Cougars to its first loss of the fall campaign.
Averett compiled 11 shots on the night, with over half on goal.
Gavin Blanks had an active outing, leading the team with four shots attempted.
Lopez knotted his second straight game with six or more saves, making six versus Pfeiffer.
The Cougars return to soccer action the following Wednesday, Sept. 10, making the hour-long trip down US-29 to battle Greensboro College. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m.
