DANVILLE, Va. — A quick start and another strong shooting performance from beyond the arc helped Averett University men's basketball roll past Washington and Lee University 79-63 on Wednesday night in the Grant Center.
Averett (12-5, 5-3 ODAC) drained two 3-pointers in the opening moments, and the Cougars quickly set the tone as they raced out to a 16-0 lead in the first six and a half minutes. With Averett in a rhythm offensively, the Cougars also controlled the glass in the first half 20-13. Averett's led grew to as many as 21 points multiple times before a shot at the buzzer pulled Washington and Lee (14-4, 6-3 ODAC) within 40-21 at halftime.
The Cougars continued to find success in the second half, keeping a comfortable cushion on the scoreboard. Washington and Lee got as close as 12 points, 54-42, but never challenged Averett's lead. Five Cougars scored in double figures, led by sophomore
Mason Mitchell's team-high 17 points.
For the second game in a row, Averett made a season-high 13 3-pointers while shooting 47.3 percent overall from the floor. The Cougars also out-rebounded Washington and Lee 39-29.
Redshirt sophomore
Timayahs Bracey and sophomore
Zach Skogen each added 13 points, with freshman
Tyler Stephens and sophomore
Jackson Sellars each scoring 10 points. Stephens also had a double-double with 10 rebounds, while Skogen had seven boards and two blocks.
The win helped Averett avenge a 75-55 loss at Washington and Lee on Dec. 3.
Averett returns to action on Friday when the Cougars travel to No. 17 Roanoke College at 6 p.m.
