WINCHESTER, Va. – Averett University women's basketball dropped its first contest of 2026, losing 70-38 at No. 23/RV Shenandoah University on Wednesday night.
Close through one quarter, Shenandoah's (11-1, 3-0 ODAC) seven-point lead jumped with a 24-12 second period that saw Averett (4-8, 0-3 ODAC) down by 19 at the halftime break.
Led by 20-plus point outbursts from Hornets Addisyn Banks and Brynna Nesselrodt, Shenandoah rode their hot hands through the rest of the contest, as the Cougars were left out of reach.
Averett held the ranked home side to only eight total points in the fourth period alone, but the deficit proved too far to overcome by games' end.
Jy'Lyia Mizell scored eight points to lead the visitors, and pulled down four boards.
Brianna Sams put up six rebounds along with six points and three blocks.

Ny'Kerasia Coleman each recorded two steals.
Averett continues its opening calendar ODAC road trip at the University of Lynchburg on Saturday, Jan. 10. Opening tip-off is set for 4:30 p.m.
