DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University's men's soccer team played its closest game of the season Wednesday night but ultimately fell just short against Guilford College, 4-2.
Averett (0-12, 0-7 ODAC) put together its best offensive performance of the season, scoring a season-high two goals while recording 11 shots, five of which were on goal.
The first 60 minutes belonged to Guilford (4-8-4, 3-2-2 ODAC), as the Quakers scored the first four goals of the match.
Midway through the second half, senior
Joshua Garcia scored his first goal of the season on Senior Night to cut the deficit to 4-1.
The Cougars were not done fighting. Just five minutes later, freshman
Michael Milligan scored to make it a two-goal game.
Averett's defense held strong for the remaining 22 minutes, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome.
Despite the loss, it was the best team performance of the season for first-year head coach Bradley Bizzell's squad. The Cougars continue to take steps in the right direction as they look to finish the season strong.
Averett will host No. 6 Lynchburg on Saturday at 3 p.m. in Danville.
