NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Down to the last singles match on Saturday afternoon, the ball tipped the way of the Rochester Institute of Technology, as the Tigers defeated No. 36 Averett University men's tennis, 4- 3 in its spring opener at the Eyre Courts.
Averett (0-1) dug deep to take the first point in doubles. The Cougars came from a match down, and won at the second and third slots.
Florian Bert and
Alex Donnelly won 6-2, while
Sam Egui and
Rafael Jodas clutched up with a 7-6 (4) tiebreak win.
In singles, RIT (5-2) won first at No. 1, then teetered back towards Averett with a Bert win, 6-4, 6-1 over Evan Ly. The Tigers then won back-to-back matches at three and four, before
Lucas Fiandra tied the dual at three with a 6-4, 6-2 win versus Tyler Mitrovic.
No. 6 went down to the third and final full set of play between
Roger Pamies Petit and Gabriel Escobar. Escobar pulled through late by winning the last two sets 6-3, 6-0 to win the match for RIT.
The Cougars head right back to action tomorrow versus T-No. 24 Christopher Newport University. Start time is set for 12 p.m.
