GREENSBORO, N.C. — Averett University baseball fell to Greensboro College in a Sunday matinee.
Averett (2-3) came out of the gates with some firepower but ultimately Greensboro (5-1) rallied for the three-game sweep of the Cougars, taking Sunday's Game 3, 13-11.
The Pride jumped out to an early lead, holding a 3-0 advantage after two innings. Averett began to mount its offensive effort in the top of the third. Junior
Maddox Jordan continued his solid start to the season with a RBI single to get the Cougars on the board. Greensboro added a run in response in the bottom of the third before Averett posted a huge number in the fourth inning. Junior
Tyler Lowe kicked things off in a oud way, hitting a leadoff triple to put some life into the Averett lineup. Senior
Connor Kubis singled into center for a RBI, and senior
Luke Keister did the same. Senior
Austin Ford drew a walk to force a runner home, junior
Drew Skinner added a sacrifice fly, and with a couple errors added into the mix Averett tallied six runs in the inning.
Greensboro answered the call, however, with a six-run inning in the sixth frame. The Pride's impressive inning gave the home team a lead that they would not relinquish, as Greensboro held off the Cougars' ninth inning rally to secure the series sweep.
Lowe led Averett with three hits, while Keister and Jordan each added a pair to their season tally. Keister finished the day as the lone Cougar to log two RBIs, while a slew of his teammates added one RBI. Sophomores
Ean Amerson and
Cade Sabin combined for nine strikeouts, with Amerson's six leading the charge.
Averett has a rare midweek doubleheader coming up next, as Carolina University comes into Danville for a two-game set on Tuesday, Feb. 24, at noon and 3 p.m.
