Women’s basketball drops road game to Randolph

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Opening February, Averett University women's basketball saw a second half veer the way of Randolph College in a 73-50 loss on Wednesday night.

Averett and Randolph scored identically in the first half; the WildCats scored 16 in each of the opening two periods, and the Cougars scored 13. Three more field goals swung the way of Randolph, with three players in scoring figures above five. Averett only saw two in that regard, and the gap only grew larger as the second period went on. 

The WildCats efficiency reigned better as the game grew late, but the Cougars hung around with a few field goals made on their end. With a deficit of only 44-34 under the five-minute mark in the third period, Averett made just one field goal to Randolph's five, all encompassing to a 14-7 run in favor of the home side. The WildCats led 58-41 with the last quarter switch in hand, and said lead would not be overcame. 

The Cougars forced Randolph to their worst field-goal shooting quarter in the fourth (5-17), but made just three of their own, and were sent to the eventual road loss.

DaiShaundria Giggetts stuffed the stat boards with 13 points, a team-high, also included with five rebounds, two blocks, and two steals. Kyjana Jordan recorded eight points and eight rebounds, and Lily Strittmatter had three assists.

The Cougars out-rebounded the WildCats by one, 31-20, edging them out on the defensive boards 21-20.

Averett returns back to the Grant Center for its White Out game on Saturday, Feb. 7 against Randolph-Macon College in the second leg of a doubleheader. Start time is set for 4:30 p.m.
