DANVILLE, Va. — Despite a rally to take the lead in the second half, Averett University men's basketball lost 80-67 to Bridgewater College on Saturday in the Grant Center.
Averett (13-8, 6-6 ODAC) was up 14-12 before Bridgewater (7-14, 3-9 ODAC) went on a 9-0 run to seize control midway through the opening period. The Eagles extended their lead to double digits late in the half before taking a 37-28 advantage into halftime.
The Cougars continued to search for an offensive rhythm and had trouble stopping Bridgewater in the paint. Still, Averett remained within striking distance. Sophomore
Mason Mitchell hit a pair of 3-pointers to get Averett within two, and freshman
Tyler Stephens' 3-pointer moments later gave Averett a 48-47 lead with 11:48 to play.
Bridgewater inched back in front and Averett couldn't get a timely basket or stop down the stretch as the Eagles begin to pull away late.
Sophomore
Jackson Sellars led Averett with 25 points, including 19 from the foul line. Mitchell chipped in 18 points, and both players led Averett with six rebounds apiece. Sellars also had a team-high five assists. Junior
Isaiah Ramazani finished with nine points off the bench.
