Averett baseball splits Saturday's games against Pfeiffer

MISENHEIMER, N.C. — Averett University baseball split Saturday's action with Pfeiffer University.

Averett (4-5) dropped Game 1 to Pfeiffer (2-7) but rallied back in Game 2 to earn a Saturday split against the Falcons.

Game 1 featured a wild display of back and forth action from both sides. Pfeiffer jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, but Averett stormed back to tie things up at 6 after six innings. The Cougars took a late advantage thanks to a two-run home run off the bat of freshman Daniel Powell Jr. in the top of the ninth, but ultimately the Falcons answered with a two-run shot of their own to win Game 1 in walk-off fashion.

Game 2 seemed to follow the same track to the previous contest in terms of how sporadic is was. Pfeiffer quickly took a large lead with five runs in the first inning alone, but the Cougars, as they've many times before already this early season, started to piece together a potential rally. One run came across in the fourth, followed by seven combined between the sixth and seventh innings to take the 8-5 lead. Nursing a three-run advantage in the ninth, Averett played add-on with a six-run onslaught. Combined with quality plate discipline and sharp hitting, Averett had four hits and five walks in the top of the frame to put the game fully to rest, 14-5.

Five Cougar hitters recorded a multi-hit game in the second leg, with three hits each from Drew Skinner and Nathan Michalowicz. Out of the bullpen, Will Green II pitched four innings of one-hit ball to lock up his first win of the season.

Averett and Pfeiffer play Game 3 of their series on Sunday, March 1, with first pitch set for 2 p.m.
