Women’s tennis defeated in conference home opener by No. 15 Washington and Lee

DANVILLE, Va. – In its home opener at the Averett Tennis Courts, Averett University women's tennis lost 7-0 to No. 15 nationally ranked Washington and Lee University on Wednesday afternoon.

Doubles was a tight-rope kind of opening for the teams. Washington and Lee (9-0, 6-0 ODAC) won at No. 1, while Averett (2-2, 1-1 ODAC) got back into it with a win at No. 2. Senior Elisa Battermann and junior Dilara Sultanova took down Grace Lorenz and Allie Murrell of the Generals, 6-3. No. 3 doubles clinched the first point for either side, but it was the Generals who took it, 6-3 in the set.

Washington and Lee dispatched all the singles matches, and completed the victory to remain unblemished. Sophomore Sunna Maass had a mightily-fought battle with Haley Stoltz at the sixth spot, but went down 7-6 (5), 6-4.

The Cougars head up to Virginia Beach for its next conference match against Virginia Wesleyan University on Saturday, March 14. Start time is set for 1 p.m.
