DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University men's volleyball split a pair of matches at home on Saturday, falling in five sets to Bridgewater College before rebounding with a straight-set win over Warren Wilson.
Prior to the first match against Bridgewater, Averett recognized senior
Nicholas Breen as part of the team's Senior Day celebration.
In the opening match, Averett (5-15, 0-8 ODAC) pushed Bridgewater (5-19, 2-7 ODAC) to five sets but came up short in a 3-2 loss. After taking the first set 25-21, the Cougars dropped the second 25-22 before responding with a 25-0 win in the third. Bridgewater forced a decisive fifth set with a 25-19 fourth-set victory and closed out the match 15-10.Â
Sophomore
Yerai Collazo led with 19 kills and eight digs, while fellow sophomore
Liam Audrain added 12 kills and three service aces. Junior
Dominick Jenkins contributed five kills and five blocks and freshman setter
Luke Brown finished with 39 assists and eight digs in the loss.
Averett bounced back later in the day with a dominant 3-0 sweep of Warren Wilson (2-9, 0-0 C2C), winning 25-18, 25-19 and 25-14.
Breen, who was honored earlier in the day, led the Cougars with 12 kills. Audrian added 11 kills and four service aces, while Jenkins chipped in seven kills. Brown guided the offense with 30 assists.Â
The Cougars travel to Harrisonburg, Virginia on Wednesday for a conference match against Eastern Mennonite University at 7 p.m.
