DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University baseball scored five runs in the ninth inning but could not overcome an early deficit in a 12-6 loss to Guilford College on Wednesday.
Guilford (9-9, 1-4 ODAC) took control early, scoring three runs in the second inning and adding runs in the third and fifth along with two more in the fourth to build a 7–0 lead. Averett (6-11, 1-4 ODAC) broke through in the fourth inning when sophomore
Nathan Michalowicz drove in a run to make it 6-1.
Averett was held in check for much of the game before Guilford extended its lead with a five-run ninth inning to make it 12-1.
The Cougars mounted a late rally in the bottom half of the ninth, scoring five runs on four hits. Michalowicz started the scoring with an RBI single, followed by an RBI single from senior
Luke Keister. Senior
Connor Kubis highlighted the inning with a three-run double to cut the deficit to six before the comeback attempt ended.

Austin Ford led Averett with two hits each, while Kubis drove in a team-high three RBIs. Michalowicz added two RBIs, and Keister recorded one RBI in the loss.
Averett is back in action to take on No. 7 Shenandoah University on the road over on Saturday, March 21, with the two game conference series set to start at noon.
